How to calculate fuel consumption

Average consumption is obtained by dividing the distance traveled by the amount of fuel used (km/l or mpg). For a reliable result, fill the tank, note the odometer reading, drive normally, and at the next fill-up divide the distance traveled by the fuel added.

Cost per distance is the fuel price divided by average consumption. This number is the most useful for comparing real usage cost between fuel types or between two different vehicles, since it accounts for both fuel price and engine efficiency.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my consumption vary so much between fill-ups?

Driving style, traffic, air conditioning use, tire pressure, and route type (city vs. highway) all significantly affect real consumption. It is best to calculate the average based on several fill-ups, not just one.

What matters more: fuel price or vehicle efficiency?

Both together. A cheaper fuel per liter can end up costing more per km if the vehicle's consumption with it is much worse โ€” that is why cost per distance is the most reliable metric for deciding.
